Why Parasite Prevention Doesn’t Stop Just Because Summer Ends in the Valley

If you’ve lived in the Phoenix area for more than a summer, you know the absolute bliss of those first crisp October mornings. After months of dodging scorching pavement and keeping your dog's paws glued to the air-conditioned indoors, fall finally invites both of you back outside for long walks, hiking trails, and backyard relaxing.
With the cooler weather, it’s easy to breathe a sigh of relief and assume seasonal chores are winding down. But there is one major health routine you should never let drop when summer ends: your pet’s parasite prevention.
While cooler weather in other parts of the country signals a welcome break from pests, the Arizona desert plays by entirely different rules.
The Arizona Exception: Why Pests Stay Active Year-Round
In many northern and even southeastern states, freezing winter temperatures kill off fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes, giving pet owners a few months off from preventatives. But here in the Valley, our mild winters and warm indoor environments mean that parasites don't take a seasonal vacation.
In fact, some of our most troublesome local pests thrive right through the autumn and winter months:
Brown Dog Ticks: This resilient species loves arid climates and indoor environments, comfortably setting up shop inside baseboards and warm homes regardless of the season.
Hitchhiking Fleas: Fleas thrive in our mild desert winters and indoor heating, quickly turning a single hitchhiker into a full household infestation.
Resilient Mosquitoes: Active around backyard water features, irrigation, and winter rains, a single bite is all it takes to transmit heartworm disease.
Fall Hiking Means More Exposure to Wildlife
As soon as the weather cools down, Valley residents and local wildlife alike become much more active. Coyotes, bobcats, javelinas, and rabbits frequently roam through neighborhood washes, greenbelts, and desert edges. When your dog sniffs along these trails or explores your backyard in the evening, they cross paths with the fleas and ticks left behind by transient wildlife. Fall is prime time for outdoor exploration, which means your pet's shield against these outdoor hitchhikers needs to be stronger than ever.
Prevention is Always Easier Than Treatment
It’s tempting to try and stretch doses or skip months when the intense summer heat finally breaks. Unfortunately, treating a full-blown flea infestation, managing tickborne illness, or treating heartworm disease is exponentially more expensive (and stressful for your pet) than simply maintaining consistent, year-round preventive care.
Let’s Keep Them Protected at Home
Keeping up with monthly preventatives ensures your pets stay safe from the hidden pests lurking in our desert landscape, no matter what month the calendar says.
